Premier League history could be made at the full-time whistle of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
Ange Postecoglou hopes to get his side back to winning ways when they welcome Villa to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After a promising start to life under the Australian, Spurs lost to Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the space of five days before the international break.
Spurs are currently fourth on 26 points, two points off league leaders Manchester City on 28 points.
To say it’s tight near the top is an understatement. The result of Spurs vs Villa, in addition to Manchester City vs Liverpool and Brentford vs Arsenal, could create a unique bit of Premier League history.
So what needs to happen? Well, City (28 points) and Liverpool (27 points) need to draw, Arsenal (27 points) need to beat Brentford and Spurs (26 points) need to draw with Villa (25 points).
That leaves the Premier League’s top five on 30, 29, 28, 27 and 26 points.
It’s something that’s never happened 13 games into a Premier League campaign.
Arsenal (30 points) would be leading the pack, leapfrogging City (29 points) and Liverpool (28 points). Spurs (27 points) would take the final Champions League spot and Villa (26 points) would be one point behind.
Always a thrilling contest, City and Liverpool could easily cancel each other out at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal lost their last away game in the league to Newcastle United but should still have enough in their locker to get past Brentford.
The trickiest result to predict is Spurs facing Villa, as Unai Emery’s side are in spectacular form and Spurs will be without several key players.
James Maddison and Micky van de Ven will be long-term absences through injury, while Cristian Romero and Yves Bissouma are serving suspensions.
Postecoglou told Optus Sport: “I think the important part is… you don’t want those periods to come, but when they do come, I can have the most impact.
“All eyes are on me: what I do, what decisions I make, how I talk, how I behave. Internally, externally – everyone is looking.
“As much as you don’t want to be in these situations, bizarrely I enjoy it. Because I know what strong beliefs I have in the way I want to do things and now everyone will look and see exactly what I’m all about and what I want from players, staff, people in the club, people outside the club.
“If we can navigate this period like I have done at other clubs it becomes an important foundation and learning tool for what we want to become.”
