Fans don’t have long to wait now to see the much-anticipated fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul.
The fight has attracted interest, and controversy, around the globe – partly as a result of the disparity in the pair’s ages, health, careers, and routes to success.
And that has also had a big impact on their comparative net worth.
‘Iron Mike’ is making a return to the boxing ring nearly 20 years after his last professional bout, in 2005. The former heavyweight champion, now 58, is regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old Paul is a YouTuber-turned-boxer, and has 10 victories since turning pro.
But Paul has suggested that he will earn as much as $40m (£31.4m) from the fight which is double Tyson’s $20m (£15.7m) participation fee. However, both could earn more based on bonuses.
Unsurprisingly, Tyson’s career earnings are staggering compared with Paul’s. After a career in which he was undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990, and won 50 professional fights, Forbes estimate that Tyson has earned $685m (£535m) during his lifetime, of which $300m (£234m) came before his retirement from boxing.
However, he declared bankruptcy in 2003 after enjoying a lavish lifestyle including expensive houses, luxury cars and pet tigers.
Since then, he has rebuilt his finances through starring in the Hangover film franchise, hosting his own podcast, Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson, and his business growing and selling cannabis-based wellness products. Wealthy Gorilla estimates his current net worth at $10m.
By contrast, Paul has an estimated net worth of close to $80m (£62m), which he mainly earned through his social media career and associated sponsorship deals. However, he has also earned millions through fights with the likes of Nate Robinson and Tommy Fury. Paul reportedly earned $8.6m (£7.2m) from the fight with Fury, which included 65 per cent of the pay-per-view money.
Paul vs Tyson is due to take place on November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It is expected to start at 10pm in the US (4am on Saturday in the UK) and is due to be streamed live on Netflix.
