InactiveWho will be the new Real Madrid manager?
It’s turbulent times at the Santiago Bernabeu after Julen Lopetegui was sacked on Monday.
Lopetegui was axed following Sunday’s El Clasico. Barcelona hammered Real Madrid 5-1 at the Camp Nou.
Santiago Solari has been put in temporary charge of Los Blancos.
Rumours had been rife that former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte could be the new Real manager.
But on Monday night it was widely reported that Conte rejected Real’s approach.
Conte’s decision to turn down Real Madrid may cost Chelsea millions.
The Times report the following on Tuesday:
Antonio Conte’s failure to agree terms with Real Madrid could cost Chelsea more than £7 million as the club’s former coach continues to pursue them for damages after his sacking last summer.
Under the terms of his last contract, signed in July 2017, Conte is entitled to receive his £9.5 million salary for a year, or until he takes another job, so it was in Chelsea’s interests for him to join Real.
Why isn’t Conte joining Real Madrid?
Several reasons are now doing the rounds trying to explain why Conte opted against a move to the Santiago Bernabeu. The Times actually flip the script, claiming Madrid ended the talks because of “Conte’s combustible character”.
Others are noting that Conte could yet accept a deal with Real Madrid.
But beIN Sports claimed Conte has rejected the opportunity due to a lack of support from key figures at Real Madrid.
